Members of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) are brainstorming in India in a bid to bring about global free-trade talks to alleviate their economic crisis as well as entering into an "end game".
Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai together with Thai trade negotiators participated in the WTO's informal ministers' two-day meeting in New Delhi yesterday and today.
The meeting was held not only to push WTO members to make more effort to bring an international treaty into the end game but also to strengthen the global trade watchdog to help reduce the risk of rising protectionist measures during the world economic crisis.
Nuntawan Sakuntanage, director-general of the Trade Negotiations Department, said yesterday that global free-trade talks have shown positive signs this year.
Leaders of WTO member countries have agreed that they should rapidly move toward bringing the Doha Round to a satisfactory conclusion after marathon talks since it was launched in 2001.
To achieve this, the meeting, which includes key WTO members from 35 countries and the G-20 - which includes the US, Canada, the United Korea - are attending talks with Pascal Lamy, WTO secretary-general.
